Program Overview:

This dynamic two-year graduate certificate is designed to give students specialized and thorough training in the detailing, supply, fabrication and installation of steel structures including the management and coordination of projects. The training is directly related to industry standards and working practices within North America and will enable students to develop detailed drawing, analytical and communication skills for the structural steel industry. Students will learn CAD skills, building information modelling (BIM), building code requirements, specifications and estimating to assist them with challenging projects. Faculties are highly qualified specialists with current and relevant field experience. The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term which replaces the Career Management course.

Admission Requirements:

  • GPA: 60% or above

  • IELTS: Overall 6.5 no band below than 6.0

  • PTE: Overall 63 with no band below than 60

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply business and industry best practices to manage projects related to structural steel fabrication

  2. Evaluate the time and resources required and set priorities to accomplish specific tasks leading to successful project completion

  3. Participate effectively in a team environment, demonstrate the ability to work as a team member and contribute to project management goals

  4. Communicate the identified tasks in written and graphical form to both internal team members and external stakeholders

  5. Interpret the intent of contract and design documentation to recognize critical information, identify missing information and clarify project scope and technical requirements

  6. Use appropriate modelling software and application methods to prepare shop drawings of steel members, connectors and erection drawings for action by the tradesperson building the structure

Career Outlook:

Upon graduation, students may find jobs in the structural steel and steel fabrication industries as steel detailers, coordinators and project managers. Graduates of the program will be well sought after by the Steel Plus Network Inc., a North American network of steel fabricators and the members of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC).
