Embedded Systems Development

Program Overview:

Embedded Systems Development (ESD) is a four-semester graduate certificate program including a one-semester exploration of career management or an optional co-op in the embedded systems industry. The program is aimed at providing the student with a solid understanding of the embedded systems industry, gaining hands-on skills in the development (design and implementation) of both hardware and software for embedded systems.

The program integrates a hands-on, practical approach to augment theoretical knowledge a student may already have coming into the program. Applied projects and lab work help prepare graduates for a career in embedded systems development. The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term instead of the Guided Career Management course.

Admission Requirements:

• GPA: 60% or above

• IELTS: Overall 6.5 no band below than 6.0

• PTE: Overall 63 with no band below than 60

Learning Outcomes:

1. Provide a customer solution that meets quality standards and satisfies customer requirements for embedded systems products.

2. Solve complex embedded systems problems through research, experimentation, integration of computer hardware and software, and the use of electronic instrumentation.

3. Design, develop, test, configure and maintain embedded systems.

4. Integrate engineering skills and knowledge with current business strategies to provide cost-effective and economically sound embedded solutions to product realization problems.

5. Adhere to professional, ethical and legal codes of practice and comply with industrial, labour, and environmental legislation.

6. Work with diverse teams consisting of hardware and software specialists.

Career Outlook:

Students graduate with the embedded software and electronic hardware development skills and experience necessary to design and implement innovative new embedded solutions for industry or entrepreneurial endeavours. Entry-level positions for graduates of this program include embedded hardware designer, embedded hardware developer, embedded software developer, software specialist, embedded solution tester, quality control professional and entrepreneur. In addition to these, career path opportunities include project manager, embedded systems production manager and industry consultant.
