Program Overview:
The study of anthropology gives you a deep, useful, cross-cultural understanding of human beings. You will gain powerful and sometimes surprising insights into the way we humans across the globe organize and understand our lives. What are “different cultures”? How can we learn to understand power relations in various societies? We approach such questions by looking at patterns and changes and comparing them. This leads us to think about the ways we position ourselves in the world and our environments.
The Department of Anthropology offers a number of research possibilities within socio-cultural anthropology and the anthropology of language. The research interests of our faculty literally cover the globe in our attempts to understand cultural variation and change. Particular interests include symbolic and interpretive theory, personhood and morality, religion and ritual, material culture and art, nationalism, and ethnographies of Latin America, the Himalayas, Polynesia, and post-socialist Europe.
